DSLR Photography: Level 1

Mike and Rhonda in Brazil

This workshop is designed for the budding photographer interested in learning the principles of photography using a D-SLR. Through shooting a variety of landscapes and wildlife, the primary focus is to encourage you to break out of the “automatic” stranglehold and take control of your camera.

This course will concentrate on the stucture of a photo and learning to think like a photographer.

    Key elements of the workshop:
    * Know your camera: investigating important settings
    * Aperture: controlling depth-of-field
    * Shutter speed: freezing action and motion blur
    * ISO: understanding and setting ISO
    * Composition guidelines
    * Use of fill flash

    Things you should do before you take this course:
    * Read your camera’s manual
    * Practice connecting and disconnecting a lens
    * Locate the camera’s major controls: mode dial, shutter release, review button
    * Take at least 50 practice photos

Primary activities within the workshop include using aperture to control depth-of-field when photographing flowers; using shutter speed to freeze action or to create motion blur; changing ISO to allow a greater range of aperture and shutter speed settings; and lot’s of guided practice photographing landscapes and birds.

I will answer individual questions and provide assistance to those who are experiencing specific problems with their photography throughout the day.

At the end of the photography session we will return to the classroom and download each student’s images to critique. This is likely the most important part of the day as you can learn much from looking at your own images and comparing them with the work of others.

Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 8 participants so everyone will receive substantial personal attention.

Weekend workshops commence at 9:00 am and conclude at approximately 5:00 pm. Please bring your own beverages and a packed lunch. Weekday workshops normally commence at 9:00 am but can be flexed to suit the group’s timetable.
