DSLR Photography: Level 2

This workshop is for photographers who want to master their cameras and experiment with metering, colour, filters and time exposures.  Much of the workshop will be spent shooting waterfront and wildlife (Canon shooters will have access to several professional lenses).

This course will concentrate on higher level photography skills and students should be confident in using their cameras and be familiar with all major controls.

    Key elements of the workshop:
    * Know your camera: understanding important settings
    * Exposure and metering
    * Colour and white balance
    * Filters: neutral density & polarizers
    * Composition guidelines

    Things you should know before taking this course:
    * Where your well-read camera manual is
    * How to find and set basic camera settings
    * What ISO is and how it affects exposure
    * How and why to shoot using aperture and shutter priority modes
    * How to control depth-of-field
    * Composition guidelines such as the rule of thirds

Primary activities of this workshop include working with auto focus modes and auto focus points to improve photography of moving objects (e.g. birds in flight); using different metering systems to improve exposures; using manual metering; tweaking auto focus settings to improve your camera’s auto focus reliability; and playing with white balance settings and filters for creative images.

I will answer individual questions and provide assistance to those who are experiencing specific problems with their photography throughout the day.

At the end of the photography session we will return to the classroom and download each student’s images to process and critique. This is a great opportunity to learn how to maximize the creativity and quality of your images. It is also a great time to review composition guidelines and see how they have been applied during the day.

Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 8 participants so everyone will receive substantial personal attention.

Weekend workshops commence at 9:00 am and conclude at approximately 5:00 pm. Please bring your own beverages and a packed lunch. Weekday workshops normally commence at 9:00 am but can be flexed to suit the group’s timetable.
